BARBARON West Highland White Terriers CELEBRATED 25 YEARS IN 2009 being established in 1984 with the arrival of our first westie "Sweep" and the journey began. Sweep was bought as a birthday present for me by my wife something I had always wanted since living near the Bellevue westie kennels in the UK and seeing the dogs running around as we drove past. Sweep taught us that owning a westie was a lifetime commitment, showing was fun, being graceful in defeat and enjoying the wins. Australian Champion Kelbindi Snowdrop "Sweep" started us on a life time journey.
Following the start of this wonderful journey came Marydon Jet Supreme "JJ" who was quickly made up to Australian Champion with much success in the show ring and the bug had really bitten. Fraserbrae Fotogenic was the next to join us and on the way to his title came many Best in Group and Best in Show awards he was a real gentleman and loved the show ring.
A very special dog for us was Australian Champion Barbaron Star Gazer our first home bred champion something you never forget.
The next big event in our kennels was the arrival in 1988 from the famous Haweswalton kennels in the UK, Haweswalton Airmail and a new era began for us. He was from the beginning a stunning dog fitting so closely to the standard with the hardest white coat which as the standard says "rarely seen to perfection" but this coat was. At his first show in early 1989 he took Best in Group and never looked back regularly taking Best in Group and along the way 3 Best in Shows and titled within 6 months of entering the ring, but his greatest achievement for us was BEST IN SHOW at the 1990 West Highland White Terrier Show of Victoria Inc the show all exhibitiors look to win their own specialty show. Glen as he was called also left his mark on his progeny siring several champions, including Ch Barbaron Suzie Quantro and Ch Barbaron Special Choice. He also passed on his true westie type and coat a dog we all dream to own Ch Haweswalton Airmail has left his mark with us for ever.
His show partner was Ch Whitebriar Jollyjingles they went every where together and were a hard team to beat often fighting out for Best of Breed. Jingles excelled in the ring and proved to be a bitch to be beaten especially at The West Highland White Terrier Show of Victoria Inc, 1988 at only 3 months old she took Baby Puppy in Show. 1989 at the club show she took bitch CC and Opposite in Show and 1990 again she took bitch CC and went on to take Runner Up in Show to Glen "THEY WERE A HARD TEAM TO BEAT"!!!
Another beautiful bitch to come from the Whitebriar kennels was Aust & NZ Ch Whitebriar Justadelite and a delight she was in every way in the ring and at home. She too had a very successful show career being titled in 1994 with a Best in Show all breeds win, closely followed by bitch CC and Opposite in Show at the West Highland White Terrier Club Inc show. Three months later bitch CC at Melbourne Royal Show what a year 1994 was for her. Jinny as she was known was also the dam of Grand Champion Barbaron Sherlock Queensland's first Grand Champion westie.
Glen's son Ch Barbaron Special Choice was another dog that took the Westie Shows by storm winning Best in Show in 1991 and 1992 at the West Highland White Terrier Club of Victoria Inc. Open Shows. He also sired several champions around Australia including Grand Champion Barbaron Sherlock Queensland's first Grand Champion westie.
Our good friends Shaun and Rhonda Weber of Queensland not only took Barbaron Sherlock to his Grand Champion title but also Grand Champion Barbaron Sheridan our second home bred grand champion. Also in partnership with Shaun and Rhonda we imported our second UK import Hillsted Schmeichel from John and Kirsten Fox who we cannot thank enough for the new journey that began. Smiekie as he is known is bred back to Haweswalton lines. Like Glen, Smiekie at his first show took Best in Group and it did not take him long to attain his title picking up along the way several Best in Groups and in group and show awards. Smiekie is also producing some lovely puppies from the first two litters he has sired have come four Australian Champions, he passes on his outstanding show temperament which the judges just cannot ignore. 2009 saw his son gaining his grand championship and becoming Grand Ch. Tarrilli Drummer Boy.
2006 saw a new dog and a new breed join our kennels Sandimorn Topof Thpops a beautiful lakeland from Warren Mowles and a new journey began. DJ as she is known proved a challenge with a whole new way of grooming to learn and that over the top lakeland showmanship to learn how to handle. But it was worth every minute at only her third show at 9 months old she took Reserve in Group then Puppy in Show and at twelve months and one week DJ became a Champion and won her second Best in Group. 2006 also saw her qualify for Puppy of the Year and compete through to round four a very exciting time for us with a new breed.
